Split refers simply to the way I have divided certain patterns, chords, and rhythms amongst the guitar quartet. It also refers to the long-short-long syncopated rhythm found throughout the piece that constantly "splits" up the beat (or the subdivisions of the beat). Split capitalizes on the fact that the distinctly uniform ensemble of the guitar quartet — i.e., four different players on the same instrument — allows for different and interesting divisions of patterns and rhythms.
Split was commissioned by San Francisco Guitar Quartet.
